10 Halloween Safety Tips for Children

kids trick or treatingPreparation for trick-or-treating on Halloween is extremely important to ensure your children’s safety. Here are 10 tips to keep kids safe on Halloween.

1. Plan the trick-or-treat route ahead of time. Knowing in advance which streets have sidewalks and which streets do not is imperative for their safety. If using the street, make sure to walk on the far left side facing traffic and avoid walking in people’s yards. Additionally, parents should check the online sex offender database to be sure to avoid those houses.

2. Wear appropriate shoes. It’s important to wear comfortable shoes that fit well so as to avoid tripping and possible foot injury.

3. Make sure costumes are short. Long costumes are harder for children to walk in and also a danger to those trying to walk around them.

4. Avoid props and masks if possible. Props are easily tripped over and masks obstruct the child’s view. Face paint is a wonderful replacement for a mask.

5. Be illuminated. Carry a flashlight to see your path and to help others see you. Parents can also place reflective tape on children’s costumes and kids love to wear glow bracelets and necklaces to make them more visible.

6. Only visit well-lit homes. The rule for trick-or-treating is that homes with their outdoor lights on are the ones with the candy and ready for visitors. Do not visit homes with no lights on.

7. Do not eat homemade treats by strangers. Also, parents should inspect all candy when trick-or-treating is finished to ensure that none has been tampered with.

8. Avoid unfamiliar pets. Parents should remind children that not all pets are sociable creatures who enjoy being petted by strangers.

9. Go trick-or-treating in large groups. Not only will this make kids more visible to cars, it is more fun for the kids to participate in this event with their friends.

10. Educate children beforehand of any possible dangers. Halloween is a good time to remind kids of stranger danger.
