What is traumatic brain injury and what are its causes?

A: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is an injury sustained to the brain caused by an outside physical force. It is also called head injury, closed head injury, or concussion. The most common causes of traumatic brain injury from infancy to early childhood are traffic accidents and falls. However, shaken baby syndrome is also a common culprit.

In fact any activity (even sports) that has to potential to direct enough force against the head to cause the brain to smash up against the skull can cause traumatic brain injury. What happens is that when the impact forces the head violently in one direction, the brain suffers internal tears and bleeding caused by the brain’s impact against the skull.
